Abstract

The article is devoted to the humanitarian and social activities of Metropolitan of Bukovina and Dalmatia Volodymyr Repta. Remaining in Chernivtsi from the first days of the Great War, this church hierarch was engaged in liturgical, church-administrative and humanitarian activities. The humanitarian component of the bishop’s activities acquired particular importance during the first Russian occupation of Chernivtsi, when the metropolitan became the representative of the city’s residents, regardless of their religious and national affiliation. However, later, these humanitarian activities of the bishop were not properly appreciated by the Austrian authorities. At the end of the Habsburg rule, he was removed from the duties of metropolitan and was reinstated in the metropolitan see only after the entry of the Romanian army into Chernivtsi in November 1918.
