РИТОРИКА ПЕРІОДУ „ДРУГОЇ СОФІСТИКИ” І ДАВНЬОГРЕЦЬКИЙ РОМАН: ПЕРЕХРЕСНІ СТЕЖКИ

Abstract

This article attempts to describe the impact of the rhetoric in the period of the "second sophistic" on the ancient Greek novels. The influence of the "second sophistic" in the style of a Greek novel was primarily aimed to restore a specific rhetorical form known as Asianism, which is characterised by extravagance and artificiality of language and style. The novels of Iamblichus, Achilles Tatius, Longus, Heliodorus include the extensive use of literary methods and means of those specific rhetorical skills, which were popular in the era of new sophistry and had the biggest impact on the rhetoric of the “Second sophistic”. Ancient Greek novels contain a large number of literary forms of new sophistic: letters of different styles, descriptions-ekphrasis, pathetic monologues, dialogues, judge’s speeches, etc. The “second sophistic” with its ornamental and entertaining rhetorical manner of writing inspired Achilles Tatius and Longus to create their excellent works, which combine both – the art of literary description and rhetorical devices.
